People probably won't agree with me, but in my experience there is no 
incompatibility between ATI and mythtv.
Back when I first started I had trouble with TV-out, in one setup it was 
fine and in another there were a few... bugs.
I had a frontend running for 1.5 years that used a radeon 9600 with a 
DVI to HDMI cable to a 32" Philipps TV and it worked perfectly.
You don't get XVMC but that's the only incompatibility if you're not 
using TV-out as far as I recall. Not sure if that's a deal breaker or not.
