Starting a forum is really hard work. I've done a few in my time (one  
or two are quite popular), but getting the first wave in is extremely  
difficult.

I'd cut the guy some slack. Not everyone is au fait with mailing  
lists, and there are some very useful features that are associated  
with web-based forums. Unfortunately, he's going about it the wrong  
way - having to subscribe to view content is a big no-no. The problem  
for this person is that MythTV is still a very geeky product, there  
is already a popular web-base forum called mythtvtalk, and I really  
doubt such a relatively small subject matter could sustain another  
forum.  Good luck to him though. I don't see anything sinister in it,  
and any on-line forum needs ads to help sustain it - they're often  
not cheap to maintain.
