Thanks for that info, Mario.
I did try that (I understand "purge" as remove packages using synaptic) 
and still the same. Obviously something was left during that "purge" 
procedure.  I attempted to rebuild the databse using mysql but that was 
getting too difficult for me.

Has someone experienced the same problem installing mythtv on ubuntu 
festy 7.04?
