How did you boot in order to run the memtest? That shows something is
working.

If you're booting from a floppy for memtest, you might have problems
with your IDE bus. Does your setup BIOS properly show the drives? Check
cables, then check them again.

I've seen socket A mobos for around $30, don't know if you consider that
"reasonable", but considering you can buy an entire machine for under
$100 it might not be.
