I just looked into this about a month ago. I ended up going with a
squeezebox (one for now, it was on sale for father's day, and I found
a $20 off coupon code using google). It is awesome. Very easy to
search for music. Plays pandora stations, etc, etc. Tons of plugins.
I bought a couple of receivers and speakers off craigslist to plug it into.
Ideally I would have 3 or 4 squeezeboxes but I live alone, and it is
hard to justify needing one in every room, so I also looked into the
netgear MP101.

It is kinda like the ugly red-headed step-sister of the squeezebox:
lcd, remote, wireless or wired. I don't think they make them anymore,
so you have to find them on ebay or some such. I have seen them
listed for around $80-$100.
It only plays mp3s, but someone on this list posted a solution to play
other formats using on-the-fly transcoding. My notes tell me to
'search for mp3fs on the mythtv-users mailing list', and voila:

Good luck!
