There is an example on the wiki of how to modify your menu to execute  
something like xawtv instead of using the built-in LiveTV viewer if  
you want to use your capture cards without recording anything from  
them. It's limited in that you can't switch tuners (and limited to  
whatever features your 3rd party viewer offers), but it will alert
