Most likely it is asking you about running fsck (to check the file 
system) on the harddrive as one of the attempts did not shutdown cleanly.
Read the instructions and let it do the check.

With regards to diagnostics I found these links that might give you some 
ideas:

Generally I would pop a Knoppix or DSL (damnsmalllinux.org) disc in to 
check that it boots and that I can mount the file systems (run the fsck 
above first if possible).
