David, thanks for the response. With the information you gave me on the
table and rows I was able to find and fix the problem. As you suggested, the
problem was with the hostname. It was set to one of my slave backends and
changing it to my master backend was the solution. I assumed since there was
only one setting for this it 'must' have to be set to the master backend.

So, I really, really, appreciate your help. Having this not working has been
bugging me for over two years. So often we just need a little help getting
started in the right direction.
