Here's my 2¢:

The mailing list works fine. If you don't like how many messages you
get, change to the digest.
Message boards are the wrong way to go. I personally dislike them,
and I'd rather hunt down the alternate ports for IRC servers to ask
questions than use them (my school blocks outgoing 6667).
Usenet is something I've never used. Can't speak for it.
Can't we just start contributing to the Wiki more? I know that when I
was a new user, I scoured the web site's documentation before using
the mailing list. The Wiki needs a lot of work, and a lot of clean-
up, but if we can put more data into it, perhaps more people will
consult it.
Otherwise, I say this system works fine. I scan the threads for
something I think I can help with, and if I can't, I skip it. If I
can, I reply. When I'm done, I highlight all and mark as read. Simple
as that. If your mail client doesn't do threading, then get a better
mail client. If your web-mail's mailbox is filling up, switch to
GMail (that's what I did).
