So you made me go and check. Even an SD TiVo has a fan, my DISH HD  
receiver has a fan and my Mom's digital cable box has a fan.

Perhaps some HD cable boxes are fanless but it would seem even they  
can't or won't do it all the time, I suspect for some of the same  
reasons you are having trouble.
