As long as a cable meets the minimum performance standards, the cable
will be fine. Long runs may require a cable constructed from higher
quality materials to reduce signal attenuation, but for short runs,
you can use cheaper cables (e.g. I use the cheap DVI cable supplied
with my LG monitor to drive 720p HD resolutions without any problems).

True, especially for short runs. The transmitted signal either gets
received at the other end of the cable, or doesn't - it's whether the
digital signal reaches a threshold value that counts.

HDMI is a digital audio-visual connection - please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdmi for me information. So yes, the same
logic applies. However, you may still need to employ quality speaker
cabling if using an AV receiver to connect to your speakers. If you're
just using your TV's speakers, the HDMI cable is all you need for
audio and video.
