I think this was the solution.  Yesterday, three shows were recorded to completion
with no problems.  The connections didn't seem obviously loose, but after wiggling
things around a bit, another problem went away as well.  Previously, the color
during playback had a flicker to it.  It wasn't serious, but enough to be
mildly annoying.  This seems to have cleared up, so I'm hopeful I'm in better
shape.

It's funny how we become creatures of habit.  Even though we now have the
flexibility to watch shows whenever we want rather than when the network
broadcasts them, my wife and boys still tend to watch their favorite shows live.
