Well, I've actually got ALSA:spdif set as the default audio output.

Anyway, have you checked that the ALSA mixer (amixer) will control your
audio output okay?  If not then it'd look to be an ALSA or hardware
issue.  If so then it'd point towards a myth configuration issue.
