I am having a similar PCM-good/AC3-bad issue on my Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G
w/ Creative Audigy 2 ZS:
[mythtv at myth1 video]$ aplay -l

[mythtv at myth1 video]$ aplay -L |egrep "spdif|iec958"
iec958 'cards.pcm.iec958'
spdif 'cards.pcm.iec958'
[mythtv at myth1 video]$ grep "pcm.digital-hw" -A 3 /etc/asound.conf

I need a rule for rate translation, is that right? I can't figure out where
to look for my card's info (alsa-project.org didn't help me) and pasting
random other people's settings in doesn't work too well.
I don't have a ~/.asoundrc, have tried various permutations of one from the
wiki without success. I'm using ALSA 1.0.11rc2 (FC5) apparently,
mythconverg.AudioOuputDevice = ALSA:default and
mythconverg.PassThruOutputDevice = default.
