[mythtv-users] Can't get smooth HD playback with GeForce 5200

MythTV MythTV at assuredsolutions.com

This problem has been plagueing me from the start, approximately 1.5
months ago. I think I've narrowed down my issue to the driver
performance of the GeForce 5200. I've sent one email out questioning
the power of my system; that email and responses are below. I am now
confident that my system is fast enough. So, here's where I stand:

I have tried many different tutorials to get the NVIDIA drivers
installed. There is so much information, in so many places, dated at
such different times, that I am totally flustered... I hope that
someone can help streamline me.

Following "http://www.stanton-finley.net/
fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html#nVidia", I just ended up with a
blank screen after I select "Watch TV" in mythTV frontend. I did
notice that System-->Display Settings-->Hardware properly identified
my video card when "nvidia-1.0-9746 - Vendor-supplied driver for
nvidia-1.0-9746 cards" is selected.

Jerod's NVIDIA 9746 tutorial, "http://www.wilsonet.com/mythtv/
fcmyth.php#video", installed almost as he described but I had the
same blank screen problem. I found a posting that says 9746 is
incompatible with the GeForce 5200 and that I should use 7667.
(http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-80314.html) So I set
off to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7667-pkg2.run.

"http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-80314.html" and "http://
www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75074&highlight=latest+Nvidia
+drivers" says to use these commands:
apt-get install nvidia-glx
apt-get install nvidia-settings
That took a day to figure out how to install apt-get and then the
packages "nvidia-glx" and "nvidia-settings" could not be found. I
guess I shouldn't be too surprised since the tutorial is 18 months old.

I set out to install "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7667-pkg2.run"
following the instructions on the NVIDIA site. I could only find
"NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7667-pkg1.run". When I tried to run it, it
says "ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module." The log says
the installer craps out at:
make[4]: *** [/tmp/selfgz3260/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7667-pkg1/usr/src/
nv/nv.0] Error 1
make[3]: *** [_module_/tmp/selfgz3260/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7667-pkg1/

make: *** [module] Error 2
ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-
installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing
installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at www.nvidia.com.

GRRRR!!!! I don't know what to do now to troubleshoot this much less
know IF I should troubleshoot this. Does anyone know of an updated
yum or apt-get package for the NVIDIA 7667 drivers? Or do I just
install all older drivers until I get one that works?

Somewhere early in all these driver installs, I got a picture without
video pauses in "Watch TV"; those pauses haven't returned. I also
got a relatively smooth picture but words scrolling across the bottom
of the screen could not be read. I probably could have lived with it
but the video resolution was set at 640x480 and I could not get
xorg.conf to allow 800x600 on my DVI connection with has a VGA
converter. (The VGA converter is only for building and testing.)
While trying to get 800x600, I lost that configuration and have not
been able to recover it.

The only driver that consistently works is "nvidia - Vendor-supplied
driver for nvidia cards" which I think is the generic driver with
Fedora Core 6. (Although this driver does not recognize my card by
name.) It has been suggested to me to look at the /var/log/Xorg.
0.log. It doesn't mention anything about XvMC, v4l, or anything else
mentioned in the video tutorials. I have attached the log file at
the end of this email.

Can someone suggest an updated tutorial for NIVIDA drivers 7667 or
any other solution used to install the proper drivers and modules for
a GeForce 5200 in use with MythTV?

Thank you for this confirmation. I took these hard drives to another
operating system that I knew better and tested their throughput.
Although they weren't the fastest I've seen, they did about 45Mbps
which I though would be fast enough for HD video streams.

I'm from the MacOS X world where everything "just works." I know a
lot about the OS but not much about the unix under the GUI.

Y'all have been hordes of help. Thank you!

Since I don't have access to a known processor, I will need to take
the fan off the CPU to get down to the chip. I'm not that excited
(maybe just lazy) about getting my hands that close to the CPU.

I tried that after your suggestion and there was no change in video
playback.

Yes, I do mean XvMC. How do I verify if it running or doing it's job?

I think I've learned enough to confirm that I am using the generic
driver but if I change to another driver, I get a blank screen. See
above.

It doesn't. Or I can't find it in the BIOS. All other speeds are
specified...

I saw that in the ASRock 775i65G manual. The BIOS did confirm that
my memory was DDR333.

It is a single DIMM.

Please see my latest issues above and give me your suggestions since
I think my problem is now with the 5200 configuration.

My signal is pretty excellent from what little experience I have with
HD airwaves.

Thank you! This is one concern that I needed confirmation on.

"Video Onboard" was just what the marketing info said. I'm not using
the Video Onboard so I wouldn't think it affects my situation.
