[mythtv-users] Playing wmv on knoppmyth

I have knoppmyth R5C7 and cannot play wmv files. I get this output:

Requested video codec family [wmv9dmo] (vfm=dmo) not available.
Enable it at compilation.
Requested video codec family [wmvdmo] (vfm=dmo) not available.
Enable it at compilation.
Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x33564D57.

I have installed w32codecs, but I still get the same output, I assume from
the output that mplayer needs to be recompiled with the codecs present,
and that its not enough to just have them on the system at playtime.

I really do not want to recompile mplayer - does anyone have any ideas?
Will  xine or Internal work?
