[mythtv-users] Upscaling standalone DVD vs. MythTV

I saw a report a while back from something like "Tom's Hardware" -- I can't exactly remember who did the research.  However, the gist was somewhat surprising.  Basically they tested computers with some of the newer video cards by Nvidia and ATI and stacked them up against various consumer DVD players.  The consensus was that the computers w/ DVD player and decent video card produced better quality output than most (if not all) of the consumer DVD players they tested - even some fairly high-end ones.

If I find the report, I'll pass it on.  In the meantime, perhaps others have some more tangible evidence / experience.

Subject: [mythtv-users] Upscaling standalone DVD vs. MythTV

I'm considering buying a nice upscaling DVD player. I'm looking at the
OPPO 971 and 981 players. How does a well built HTPC running Myth
compete as a player? I know there's a ton of variables there, but just
say I had a very nice rig, using HDMI inputs to my 720p HDTV. Would I,
could I, possibly be happy enough with the playback to not want or
need the standalone player?

I was unable to find any benchmarks or direct comparisons between a
linux media PC and an Oppo player. So any pointers toward further
reading, or strait up opinions are very appreciated.
thanks,
--Jason
