For recordings it's trying to pull enough data for the thumbnails,  
and even in the videos menu it's wanting to get the graphics across  
the network.

Sounds like it's doing exactly what you should expect if your media  
is mounted across a bottlenecked path.

You know what your options are I expect :-)
