When you say "new" do you mean slim-line PStwo? If so, nearly  
impossible, unless you can convince the PS2 to recognize an external  
hard disk through something like HDLoader, then find a Linux booter,  
and theoretically it can work. Some of the earlier PStwos have the  
IDE headers still on the Mobo.

An older "fat" PS2, however, should work alright, provided you can  
find a Linux for PS2 kit (or just the boot DVD). Don't know how well  
it'll perform, or if it'll even compile, but I'd be interest to know  
the outcome. I DO know, that somewhere, at some university, there is  
a PS2 cluster that I think is still operational.
