You can build some of the drivers as modules, just not the ones required
to actually boot the system and get the root filesystem mounted.  One
the root filesystem is mounted via NFS, the system can find the other
modules and then load them.  So I have the soundcard and sundry other
bits compiled as modules.

A initrd image isn't required if the kernel is compiled in this manner.
