I played around with an MVP because I had one already. They do have  
some advantages over  a TiVo in that they are totally silent, very  
small and consume little power. All I wanted to do was view  
recordings so the limitations didn't bother me.

I'm not suggesting anyone "buy" a TiVo to use as a front end, and  
even if it could be made to work as a F/E it would also be  
"incomplete in their functionality" for several reasons. An XBox  
might be a better solution, or a Mac Mini, it all depends on what you  
want to do.

But a lot of us have these old TiVo units hanging around, as you said  
in your original post it is a shame they can't be more useful.
