How about using an IR blaster:

  http://irblaster.info/

and replacing the receiver end with something like this:

  http://www.smarthome.com/8130W.html

Not sure if it would work, maybe someone else knows.  If it would, you
could have it appear to be built in to the front of a door or panel,
which would look reasonably professional, IMHO :)
