I build from source and yes I have created a separate mythtv
user for all of my boxes. Although I had my own "media server"
scheme going long before MythTV was around. I have a user and a
group named media that owns all of my media files. mythtv belongs
to this group and the recordings directory is group writable.
So, all of my stuff is in /home/media but it's essentially
the same idea as what you've done.
/home/media/Music
/home/media/Images
/home/media/Icons
/home/media/Lectures
/home/media/Video
/home/media/DVD
/home/media/Sounds (old wav files and such)
/home/media/Books
/home/media/AudioBooks
