uname -a

works on mine and reports

Linux hal 2.6.20-1.2320.fc5 #1 SMP Tue Jun 12 18:50:49 EDT 2007 x86_64

"hal" is my hostname (pretty original, eh?).  I assume the x86_64 at the 
end would be i686 (or some such) on a 32-bit.  I could reboot in Kubuntu 
and try it, but my wife is watching a recording....
