I took only a quick look at your ps output in the original post so I
missed that there were two frontends with 1 as their parent process.
Not positive but it looks like you are indeed starting two frontends:

live 1870 1 0 11:58 ? 00:00:06 mythfrontend
root 1873 1870 0 11:58 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend
root 1874 1873 0 11:58 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend
root 1882 1873 0 11:59 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend

live 1881 1 0 11:58 ? 00:00:07 mythfrontend
root 1886 1881 0 11:59 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend
root 1887 1886 0 11:59 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend
root 1888 1886 0 12:00 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend
root 1890 1886 0 12:05 ? 00:00:00 mythfrontend

An easy test is to ssh as root and kill -9 one of the ones with PPID
1. That would explain the sluggishness.

I switched to XBMC months ago but a Xebian based frontend is fairly
usable even though the box is way short of memory. I noticed it
mostly between menus like when I'd go into Watch Recordings there'd
be a second or two pause as the appropriate code got swapped in and
then it'd be responsive. If I moved over to mythweather there'd be
the same 1-3 second delay and then it'd be fine. Back to recordings
would delay 1-3 ...
