Dave,

Thanks for continuing to help.

I found what I believe is a more accurate lircd.conf file for my
Hauppauge PVR-150, so I tried stepping through the howto once again,
carefully and slowly.

Still, when I get to the end and type in "irw", I simply get the command
prompt back and nothing more.

After that, I typed out "dmesg", and in this time I noticed these rather
ominous messages:

[ 52.400884] **WARNING** I2C adapter driver [NVIDIA i2c adapter 0 at
1:00.0] forgot to specify physical device; fix it!
[ 52.403772] **WARNING** I2C adapter driver [NVIDIA i2c adapter 1 at
1:00.0] forgot to specify physical device; fix it!
[ 52.406551] **WARNING** I2C adapter driver [NVIDIA i2c adapter 2 at
1:00.0] forgot to specify physical device; fix it!
[ 53.214529] ppdev: user-space parallel port driver
[ 54.012978] lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, at major 61
[ 54.057552] lirc_pvr150: no version for "lirc_unregister_plugin"
found: kernel tainted.
[ 54.099649] lirc_pvr150: chip found with RX and TX
[ 54.104580] lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin: sample_rate: 0
[ 54.113633] lirc_pvr150: firmware haup-ir-blaster.bin not available (-2)

"Kernel tainted" sounds very bad. And Nvidia looks unhappy, though I'm
unclear as to how it has relevance to my LIRC.

Do these messages shed light on the problem?
