[mythtv-users] How can I determine proper audio settings

MythTV Users,

In the mythfrontend->setup->general->audio, I have:

4 possible settings for "Audio output device". (ALSA:default, /dev/dsp/,
/dev/dsp1, /dev/adsp)
2 possible settings for "Passthrough output device". (Default,
ALSA:iec958:[AES0 0x02})
3 possible settings for "Mixer Device". (default, /dev/mixer/, /dev/mixer1)
2 possible settings for "Mixer Controls". (PCM, Master)
... and 5 check boxes for various controls.

My high school math escapes me at the moment, but I think there are a
couple dozen possible combinations. I've tried experimenting a bit, but
I'm not sure I'm up to the task of charting all possible combinations
and working out which will actually make my sound work.

My sound, by the way, doesn't work right now. By which I mean, it works
outside of MythTV, but not within it.

There must be a way of first determining what my system is, and then
using that to select the correct combination of audio controls. Or at
least narrow them down.

Is there a way I can do this?

Thanks for any advice or information.
