fwiw, I've been using only EIT for my mythtv installation, and for me it
works well enough. I wouldn't want anyone to think that they can't
effectively use mythtv just because they don't have access to a program
guide.
here are a few points to note if using only EIT :
- you can easily schedule recordings if they're just about to be shown
- you can easily schedule recordings that aren't in your guide using
'custom record' or 'manual record'
- you can easily schedule recordings once a show has been broadcast (
since mythtv seems to keep data in it's guide for about the past two
days )
- abc broadcasts eit data usually for at least the next 24 hrs
issues with eit :
- can run into problems with program start / end times overlapping when
the stations get things wrong ( work around by having at least two
tuners )
- you won't get advance notice of conflicts ( work around by having more
tuners )
- problem when the station uses the episode name as part of the program
title ( work around by using custom record once you notice what's
happening )
I'm not denying that a proper program guide is better, but I'd class it
as nice to have, not as a necessity. having run without one for over six
months I can say that it really isn't that much of a problem. it just
needs a little bit more manual oversight than if you had properly
functioning guide data.
regards.
