I agree, but apparently some others do not.

Two good points have been raised in this thread. The first is that  
hard drive capacities have far outstripped the needs of most  
consumers, but the makers have to keep selling drives somehow.  Myth  
users are probably among the few consumers who actually push capacity  
towards the practical limit, but even they can afford really large  
arrays if they really want to. (with exceptions of course).

The second point is that most of us abuse our drives horribly.  
Consumer cases are not really designed for good drive cooling, and  
turning drives on and off all the time is never good for them. In  
over 20 years of using hard drives I can only recall one that failed  
other than at startup, and it had been running for 2 years in a very  
hot case (approx 140 deg. F).

Considering what you get for the money I think the manufacturers do a  
good job of putting a truly amazing product into our hands for an  
incredibly low price.

If somebody had told me 25 years ago that I would be able to buy a  
500GB drive for less than the cost of a pair of bicycle tires I'd  
probably still be laughing.
