[mythtv-users] Tuner cards that do HD?

Non-broadcast channels will be encrypted, so you'll need Comcast's box,
unfortunately. Broadcast channels you should be able to pick up but
they are a bit tricky to find in my experience. Something to do with
them not being marked properly so they don't show up in scans, you have
to add them manually and it will work. The dtv_multiplex table I
think. I'm not sure, and this is based on my experiences over a year ago.

I use the pcHDTV HD-3000 which I highly recommend. The current model is
the HD-5500, which my roommate has, but we still haven't gotten QAM256
scanning working on it. Even at school where channels are correctly
marked for scanning (i.e., my HD-3000 picks them up, but his HD-5500
doesn't). If you use the development version of the kernel drivers you
might have better luck.

I guess if you get the Comcast box as a rental it's not too much. Then
you'll get a bunch of extra channels like Discovery HD that you wouldn't
be able to get otherwise (normally you'd only be able to get ABC, CBS,
etc.). The Comcast box probably only has analog out, but if it's
component then it's still pretty good. Unfortunately I don't know a
card that captures component. The pcHDTV cards capture composite, but
it would look really bad.
