Although I'm not 100% sure either that EIT scanning is the culprit,
have you tried completely disabling EIT scanning and using the Radio
Times listings to see if the problem goes away?

I'm slightly surprised with the EIT problems as my master backend is
on 24/7 and it's been a while since I last needed to reboot it:

 01:37:37 up 131 days, 3:15, 3 users, load average: 0.34, 0.36, 0.59

It runs FC4 (2.6.16) but I run recent SVN builds with 3 DVB (KWorld
DVB Xpert) and 1 PVR-150 card in the box. I do use EIT scanning for
radio channels, as the RT data does not provide this, but I have not
problems with the backend hanging.

Maybe either full logging or a backtrace will be the only way to see
whether EIT is truly the culprit here.
