Yeah, that is of course one of the major reasons why RHEL/CentOS stays w/the 
same kernel base for the entire product lifetime. Post-2.6.18 has been a bit 
shaky. There was a TON of stabilization work done for 2.6.18, in no small 
part because that's what RHEL5 is using as its base. Lots of new feature/big 
change stuff went in after 2.6.18 was out the door, so yeah, things have 
been, uh, interesting...

I think 'touch /.autofsck' then reboot will trigger an automagic check on 
boot.
