OK I regressed the driver back to 1.0-7184 - No Change.

I have noticed:

1. It never happens if I'm actually just playing video.
2. It can happen if the OSD is up (video paused etc)
3. I can always make it happen by going up and down in a list in Myth.
4. If I leave Myth at the recorded programs list menu it will hard lock
the box after about 5 minutes.
5. I can leave it for days at the main menu with no problems - may lock
up if I actually select something.
6. The problem happens using both the Qt and OpenGL painter


However I have had some success with a BIOS upgrade of the machine
though, although this could have just been the resetting to BIOS
defaults.

I noticed that the AGP aperture settings had changed from the 32MB I had
it set at to the default of 64MB. (my card is a 256Mb card and I have
previously tried 128Mb and 256Mb with no luck)

Since then the only frontend lock up I had was when I was doing manual
Zoom to full motion video - and it wasn't a hard lockup
(ctrl-alt-backspace still worked)

If anyone else is having issues it may be worth resetting your BIOS to
defaults and making sure that the AGP aperture is 64Mb

Anyone else have some comments on this?

Well by the look of it it's not just ATI RS480.

The top two lines of lspci on my system are:

0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9100 IGP Host
Bridge 0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9100 IGP
PCI/AGP Bridge

(No I can't use the onboard video it's sh*t) -- maybe I will just take
this opportunity to upgrade my mainboard - I never liked it.....

But I'd like to fix it first.  I'll let you know the results.

I'm not sure if this applies to 6600s, but this might be of interest:

Hard lockups seem to result when using an Nvidia 6200 with a motherboard
based on the ATI RS480 chipset.
