I could have sworn I tried that...  irw didn't fail right away and I had
this in my log:

Sep 13 11:48:16 lies lircd-0.8.0[6042]: lircd(userspace) ready
Sep 13 11:48:17 lies lircd: lircd startup succeeded
Sep 13 11:48:24 lies lircd-0.8.0[6042]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
Sep 13 11:48:31 lies lircd-0.8.0[6042]: removed client

I will know more when I get home, since all of this is remote data..
