The precompiled versions all use --prefix=/usr and the default for the 
source is --prefix=/usr/local so change your cofigure settings and 
recompile. You cannot use the frontend without the backend so no to your 
question. Of course they can still watch tv until you are ready to 
upgrade then stop the service, upgrade then run mythtv-setup to update 
your database to the current version. Then you should be able to restart 
the backend with no problems.
