Well, now I just feel kinda stupid.  My video driver is fine with OpenGL
and using OpenGL for the theme painting works great.  I am still curious
to know why QT didn't work properly, but I am not going to put time into
figuring it out when it seems to be working well now.  Thanks for
leading me in the right direction.
