Just an update in case anyone has been looking into this.  I will
sheepishly admit that a simple

/usr/X11R6/bin/xset -dpms
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset s off

fixed my 'blank' recordings problem.  I was previously capturing from
the coax input with this card and didn't have that set as it would
capture successfully without that setting.
