you are really very new around here :)
Let me introduce you to "Jarod's guide":

At some time in the past RH decided not to ship the source in a
non-src.rpm package. The sources are available from the src.rpm, it's
a bit more involved, but you get them (but unconfigured). It should be
mentioned in the README/RELEASE-NOTES of Fedora Core somehwere.

Yes, that's the idea. Get the packages from ATrpms (look at Jarod's
guide on how to set this all up) and then just configure lirc, no need
to build it.

Axel,

I should be more clear. I did use Jarod's guide for the initial setup and installation. It took about 90 minutes, including the initial database fill and everything else (compared to several days trying workarounds for this and that under CentOS). What I meant was, I could not find any guides for setting up an IR Blaster using LIRC that did not begin with the assumption that you needed to build everything from source (which requires the kernel sources, which is why I'm in the current dilemma).

Jarod's guide, AFAIK, contains no information on setting up an IR blaster. If I can just set up the blaster with LIRC as it is currently installed, so much the better--it honestly seems as if it should not be *nearly* this complicated to get a serial device to flash lights!

Regards,
Pete
