So, did you actually look and see if /usr/share/sounds/alsa/ 
Front_Left.wav exists? :) I'm unclear if the error aplay is giving  
you is because the file doesn't exist on your system or if it is  
because of some other problem.

Unmuting IEC958 was progress. For me it's both unmuted and the vol is  
set to 100. I've read elsewhere that setting the vol level on the  
IEC958 isn't really important. I took the "safe" road and set it to  
100 and that works for me.

Your aplay -L output indecates you still have an asoundrc file  
somewhere. Check in ~/.asoundrc and /etc/asoundrc and remove it for now.

Try again with mplayer: "mplayer -v -ao alsa -afm hwac3 - 
monitoraspect 16:9 -dvd-device /dev/cdrom dvd://1" and let us know  
about the .wav file error. Also, what distro is this?
