I'm running a Sempron 2800 (E6 stepping) on an nForce3 Socket 754 board and haven't had any problems with non-XvMC 1080i or 720p going to my 50" 768 line 72hz plasma.  I run libmpeg2, kerneldeint and extra audio buffering.  It'll even handle commercial flagging at the same time as HD playback and a little bit of time stretch, but anything else beyond that would probably put it over the edge.

In any case, I sure hope the deal is really great ($59 for that combo is "pretty good" around here at present) as AGP, DDR1 and socket 754 are dead ends upgrade-wise.  Plus, those Semprons lack the Athlon64 power saving extensions and you will want to pay attention to the stepping to see if it is 64 bit capable.
