Thanks for the suggestion.  I think this may have been a problem too,
but the problem underlying it all was that I forgot to choose "nvidia"
rather than "nv" as the driver in xorg.conf.

At the moment, if I take some 1920x1080 video which I previously
recorded in MythTV and play it back using xine, it scales nicely to
fit the screen and manages to take only 30-32% CPU time, and X is
taking almost no CPU time.  (command line:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit /usr/bin/xine --video-driver xvmc -f
2121_20061125001005.mpg
It is very smooth, great audio etc.  If I try to play the same video
from MythTV  (not recording simultaneously or anything) it takes most
of the CPU time for the MythTV process, has choppy audio, dropped
frames etc.  I have de-interlacing turned off, and using extra audio
buffering.  I see plenty of messages in the log about XvMC so I think
Myth is using it successfully.
