People surf because they want their mind numbed by some random TV, but
there's nothing in the schedule that stands out as worthy of recording.
For such people (and I count myself as an occasional surfer), flipping
is necessary. You pick a random program, and it turns out to be even
worse than the guide indicated it would be, so you need to pick
something else (less bad) rightaway.
Insomnia would seem to be accompanied by this condition; bad TV on all
channels is predominantly a post-midnight state-of-affairs
(early-morning TV in the UK is just for kids; and anyway, if I'm up
early, I work, I don't view). Unemployed house-spouses may have a
different perspective, favouring Judge Judy, and the rest of the
afternoon schedule of material unworthy of recording.
