Sure, when you're playing a previously-recorded show. I was talking
about watching 'live TV'.

No, I was talking about watching 'live TV' on a TiVo. The mechanism
you described does not exist in tivo. When you're watching 'live TV',
tivo writes the data to the on-disk buffer, then reads it back again
for playback. The "unavoidable 3 second pause" is completely avoidable,
and in fact does not exist in tivo either.
