I have a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 with a ALC882 chip. I use the optical output
to my AV receiver for digital sound DD 5.1. I got it working with this
setup (from a post on this list):

In mythfrontend->Setup

Audio Output Device: ALSA:iec958
Passthrough device: ALSA:iec958
Enable AC3 to SPDIF Passthrough

then run this:

amixer set IEC958 mute
aplay -D spdif /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
amixer set IEC958 unmute
mythfrontend

I don't use a .asoundrc file.
