I've not been successful with just those steps. This is what I've had to
do to change my drivers so that everything works. Just recently did this
upgrade to 9629.

1. Download the the driver version you want to install from Nvidia.
2. Shut down X to a command prompt. I have mine set up to not start up
the graphical login because I've had a number of problems with the right
drivers.
3. login as root and 'sh NVIDIA<version that you want to install>'. It
goes through and builds and installs everything it has.
4. Reboot.
5. #yum -y install nvidia-graphics9629-kmdl-$KVER
nvidia-graphics9629-libs nvidia-graphics9629. I've had no problem doing
this all in one line. Use either livna or atrpms, whichever, has the
right version for your kernel. Logout of root.
6. Login as your user and startx. You might have to tweak the xorg.conf
for parameters depending on the nvidia driver version that you load for
best performance and capabilities.
