[mythtv-users] pvr-500 ubuntu kernel

I finally have my system up and mostly functional.
Unbuntu Edgy (6.10)
Kernel 2.6.17
Ivtv 0.7.1
Hauppauge pvr-500 with updated firmware to 2.0.28.23053
Myth 0.20 (Edgy packaged)

My recordings look like we are sitting outside at about midnight.  So it is
nearly black, but I can see the images.

This was tested using:
cat /dev/video0 > /tmp/test.mpg
                                 
Ctrl -C to stop recording. Open mplayer: Applications --> Sound
and Video --> Mplayer Movie Player. Right click on the window
--> Open File --> /tmp/test.mpg. 


I have been reading on the KnoppMyth forums and they indicate there are
patches to the kernel to fix a lot of pvr-500 tuners which have the samsung
tuner (Samsung TCPN 2121P30A).  This means compiling the kernel and other
items.

I am quite new to Linux.

I attempted to recompile my 2.6.17 kernel and ran into errors.
Found some howtos and read that the ivtv fixes are in kernel 2.6.18.1.

Having never done this before, is it worthwhile to:
A) Fix my compiling issues with 2.6.17 with the samsung tuner patches
B) Update my kernel to 2.6.18.1

I have no idea what bag of worms I open by trying to move to a newer kernel.
Is there something else that would be recommended perhaps to try first?

I tried changing all references to RTjpeg to MPEG-4 hoping that might solve
some of these issues.  I am not even sure how to install RTjpeg, my googles
turned up empty.
