[mythtv-users] remote control problems

I am trying to use the, "old" grey Hauppauge remote with my pvr-350 on a Suse 10.0 box.  When I am in the frontend I can press the numeric buttons and Myth recognizes and changes to whatever channel is entered.  No other button press is recognized.

When I exit the frontend I notice that I get the following:

mythtv: could not connect to socket
mythtv: Connection refused
lirc_init failed for mythtv, see preceding messages

Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?
