i could not for the life of me find a posting of anyone else who has had this problem, but i'm hoping someone has a fix.
in both live tv and watching a recording i get blocky lines over the video that look something like this:
================  |---------                                             ----------|
--------- ----------
--------- ----------
--------- ----------
--------- ----------
--------- ----------
--------- ----------
--------- ----------
================ sorry for the terrible ASCII art, i could try to produce a screen shot later if that would help.
i have a widescreen set with a native res of 1366x768, so i'm running with a 1360x768 modeline.
the lines are on the sides and seem to stop where a SD picture would sit, SD digital channels in fact show up fine.
so i tried playing an HD recording in mplayer, there were no lines, but the image was squashed because i had not told mplayer the aspect ratio of my set.
as soon as i used - monitoraspect 16:9 the result was the same
this gets me thinking that maybe mythtv is trying to convert the signal for 4:3?? but i didn't find any setting for this.
also, mplayer claims the resolution of the video is 1280x720, but when i try to play it unscaled the result is still the same.
i played around with command line parameters to mplayer and realized that if i scale it to 1280x675 it will play fine! one more vertical pixel will induce blocks.
out of curiousity i tried scaling it to 1200x675 so it would remain 16:9 and not be distorted, but that reintroduced the lines.
its as if myth didn't actually record the last 45 pixels or something, very weird.

only thing i just though of now that i haven't tried is changing my modeline, since it's not an *exact* 16:9.
i could run the mythbox at 720p and let my TV handle the scaling. it should handle ATSC standard resolutions well i hope.

hardware details:
Dvico Fusion HDTV5 Lite
VIA EPIA SP13000 (CN400 chipset, using Via XvMC - only way it can play HD)
TV has VGA input and is connected to the mythbox with this
