I think the point was that optical cables don't use any form
of electrical transmission, so the gold does nothing.  USB, 
Parallel and HDMI do, where the gold plating can technically 
on a scientific level make a difference, at least with preventing
corrosion.

So yes, it would be very difficult to beat gold plated optical
cables.  Maybe a gold-plated wireless transceiver???
