The difference isn't that Linux couldn't fix what Windows could, but
that Linux worked with what Windows chose to ignore ;)

OS X generally tends not to use the MBR, and neither did Mac OS
Classic (OS 9 and earlier). OS X/Classic uses an "Apple Partition
Map" for their PowerPC line of systems, and the OS X Intel machines
use a GUID Partition Map.
I had a similar problem with an external drive I formatted with my
iBook. What I discovered, however, is that parted and fdisk were
creating the proper partitions, but not changing the partition maps.
Linux doesn't seem to be on too friendly terms with the APM, and I
can't speak for GUID. I found that by using parted, I could change
the partition map back to something Linux understood (interestingly
enough, it didn't like the BSD partition map, but loved the MSDOS
partition map). Also, reformatting the drive with the Mac, making
sure to go into the Partition page of the Disk Utility (with the
proper drive selected, of course), and click on "Options" and
choosing the MBR option.
Sorry for the late reply.
